A variety of useful and amazing applications can be used to enhance student learning in classrooms
UNTIL recently, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was viewed as simply a standalone subject students should study to have a basic understanding of how programs in computers and associated devices are used. But in order for students to really use technology efficiently and effectively, it should be blended across the curriculum to enhance students’ learning.
At YCIS’s Gubei campus, we are integrating technology into nearly every subject in Year 7 providing our high school students with tools that enhance their core learning. By integrating technology into subjects like science, art, mathematics, design and technology, and more, we are preparing students for success by learning how to use the most up-to-date tools they will need to succeed as they head towards university and beyond.
Here are a few learning apps we recommend that are used on campus:
All Subjects — iBooks: Through iBooks, students can access their electronic textbooks, any time, any place, using a tablet, computer, or smartphone. Additionally, students can easily store their notes and annotations in an electronic format to enhance their studying.
Chinese Studies — Tang Poetry: There are a great number of useful language and translation apps available. For students in YCIS’s Chinese language program, learning traditional poems with the Tang Poetry app is a great way to build language skills and cultural appreciation.
English and Literature — Voice Thread: This app can be used to create group conversations around images. In YCIS’s English classes, students can discuss characteristics of various images uploaded, allowing them to strengthen their higher-level vocabulary — important for ACT and SAT preparation.
Environmental Studies — EcoChallenge: Eco awareness is important in today’s world, and it has a significant focus at YCIS. With the EcoChallenge app, students have a fun platform to learn how to reduce their environmental footprint.
Music — GarageBand: In YCIS’s music classes, students learn about music history, form, and performance, and they create their own compositions using GarageBand.
Design & Technology (D&T) — Brand Packaging: In our D&T classes, students learn about successful brand packaging, and must complete a project where they use what they have learned to create their own eco-friendly packaging for chocolates. The
app has samples and case studies
on packaging, a perfect start
for research.
Business Studies — Logo Quiz: Learning about logos provides a good foundation for students interested in pursing studies in marketing and business.
Art — Aurasma: Some of our art classes are actually using Aurasma, an app that lets users create and share their own augmented reality experiences; in other words, they can embed interactive content into an image that, when scanned, allows the viewer to see related video or animation.
Computing — Scratch: We teach students basic computer programming through platforms including Scratch. Our students are amazed to see what their computers are actually doing and enjoy building programs.
