Advantages are numerous and far-reaching

THE International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is designed to be holistic and rigorous. History as a discipline is also by nature holistic and rigorous. The course itself can be quite demanding with regards to analyzing sources and documents, as well as understanding different interpretations and conflicting points of view.

The history teacher must decide which topics within the IB History guide will be covered. This allows the teacher to decide on content that represents more global coverage. IB History does not allow curriculum to be taught that only applies to one country or region.

The overall rigor of the courses studied in the program helps reinforce a holistic approach to learning. No course selected by a student is more important than another. Having six subjects ensures students have a well-balanced education providing them with the skills they need at the post-secondary level, regardless of the educational path they choose. Students need to give equal importance to each course, or they may run the risk of not earning their diploma.

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) component does a wonderful job of reinforcing moral and ethical values across political boundaries and cultures. Having a TOK link in every history lesson is useful for the students as well as teachers with regards to discussing important moral and ethical values in history, and in our daily lives. Discussing values and ethics within the context of the course helps us to reassess our own personal opinions and biases. It also encourages and develops students’ critical thinking skills.

One of the core requirements for the IB program is the Extended Essay. It is an independent and self-directed piece of research. This piece of writing provides students with the opportunity to engage in an in-depth study of a topic of interest within a chosen subject. This exercise prepares our learners with the skills needed to complete undergraduate research.

Creativity, Action and Service provides students with opportunities to reach out and volunteer within their community.

Studying history provides students with many examples of atrocities and human suffering that occurred around the world. Having personal experience of reaching out to the community and helping others ensures the IB graduate is a considerate and compassionate individual, as well as a responsible global citizen.
