BISS Puxi’s High Performance Learningapproach prepares students for life

At the British International School Shanghai, Puxi campus we believe passionately in learning, and our modern approach to education continues to help our students shine. Great teachers, committed students and a community spirit that emphasizes the rewards from hard work and engagement have delivered world class results once again at every level in the school.

By every measure our students have achieved academic results that stand out in Shanghai and beyond. This is all the more impressive when we look at the range of students and the other activities they are involved in at school. We pride ourselves on being a community school, educating a wide variety of students with ability levels covering the full range. Baseline testing of cognitive ability shows a profile of students from the 10th percentile right the way up to the very top of the scale, with a mixture of native and non-native speakers of English. Our key admissions requirement at all levels is that students demonstrate that they are keen to learn, with a mindset that identifies hard work with outstanding outcomes. Our success is built on the best of modern educational practice — our High Performance Learning approach — coupled with inspirational teaching and a realization that carefully directed hard work always brings clearly visible academic success. Well done to the students of all ages, from 2 to 18, who’ve worked together and done so well this year.  We’re proud to have played our part in their success.

Results that command respect

Our students can be confident that their results will command respect around the world and open doors to universities and careers. A characteristic strength of British-based education is that all qualifications are backed by prestigious external awarding bodies, and students take pride in certificates issued by organizations such as the International Baccalaureate Organization and the University of Cambridge.

IGCSE results

We saw outstanding results from this year’s IGCSE cohort, with 54 percent of all the grades achieved by our students being A or A*. This is double the world average of 27 percent and shows what students can achieve when they support, encourage and motivate each other.

IB Diploma results

Two years of hard work by students and teachers on what universities world-wide recognize as the most prestigious, demanding and rigorous course of pre-university study unquestionably paid off for the class of 2013, who achieved remarkable scores.

Our students’ average IB Diploma score of 35 points was over 5 points above the world average and one in four of our students achieved scores of over 40 points — a globally acknowledged mark of true excellence — and five times the global figure of 5 percent.

The top scores this year were achieved by Hendrik Hoelzer, who takes up a place at Oxford University to read Economics and Management, Mayu Tojo (taking a gap year, then studying to be a doctor in Japan) and Bjorn Andersson (studying Industrial Engineering at EPF Lausanne). They achieved 44, 43 and 43 points respectively and deserve a special mention.

Our students, their parents and our dedicated teachers have much to be proud of as we start a new academic year. These results are once again testimony to the hard work of both students (a significant number of whom have only been with us for a short period) and staff. They are a wonderful example of the high levels of academic success achieved through our approach to High Performance Learning for everybody developed by Professor Deborah Eyre, Nord Anglia Education’s director of Education. Her work running the UK government’s National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth is now something that all of our students are benefiting greatly from.

After all, as Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus professor at the London Institute puts it: “smart isn’t something you are, smart is something you get.” We are proud of all our students and their achievements. Well done to them for “getting smart.”
