Being bilingual

HELLO everyone. 大家好 As a foreigner here in Shanghai, it is essential for me to be able to speak Chinese, however, I am fluent in my mother tongue as well: English.

Being able to speak two languages means that I am bilingual, and being bilingual sure has its advantages. Having the ability to converse in two different languages means that I can travel to Chinese-speaking countries and face no language barriers. I can understand the locals and enjoy the culture with no language problems to overcome.

Also, speaking both English and Chinese, which are two of the most spoken languages in the world, allows me to have advantages in the future. When I have reached the point of my life when I need to find a job, being bilingual will be an advantage as more companies are looking for people who can speak both English and Chinese.

As China is a rising country with a strong economy, many companies want to do business here, and they need Chinese and English speaking employees to help make business deals. There are many advantages to learning more than one language, however, there are struggles learning a new language.

I remember when I was around 5-6 years old, and I had my first Chinese lesson. Confusing was the only word in my mind. I have to admit, it is difficult to pick up a new language. Despite the challenges, it is worth it. We should never miss out on a chance to learn another language.
