Best motivation comes from within

I got one foot in the door as I came home from school and yelled, "Mom! My friends are throwing snowballs outside! Can I go play?" She let out a sigh, shook her head and gave me a you-know-the-answer look. When I was little, my parents always stressed that academics came first. This was crucial to the development of my work ethic today, and I thank them for it immensely.

A "high academic performance" is not simply getting an A on a test or a 4.0 GPA. Instead, I think it is to provide the respect that is deserved. My parents have raised and invested a huge portion of their lives in me. I truly believe they deserve to have a child who is willing to work hard to fulfill their standards. Teachers provide hours and hours of their time - their whole career really - in order to insure each student receives an education. Is it fair to them to fail a test? They are giving us all the tools that are needed for success, and it is up to us, the students, to use them.

However, these considerations are not as strong as my main source of motivation - myself. Instead of seeing the disappointment in my parents' eyes when I tell them I did poorly on a math test, they seem to read it on my own face before I reveal the truth. Where I have weaknesses, I reinforce them with an extra hour of reading. In fields where I am comfortable, I challenge myself with advanced courses. In order to succeed, one has to truly want and desire to succeed.
