Cambridge 'Excellence Award' for Yew Chung
REPRESENTATIVES of University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) presented the Cambridge Award for "Excellence in Education" to Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai) recently at its Gubei campus.
The award recognized the school's commitment to education and performance as well as its students' history of outstanding results. A total of 53 percent of students from YCIS Shanghai achieved A* to A, and 87 percent scored A* to C in 2011 examinations.
Tom Ulmet, superintendent for Yew Chung International School in China, explained that the school does not focus solely on getting good exam results for students.
"We have our own philosophy. Students are here with us for three or four years and they absorb our teaching methods and our style of developing creativity and motivation," Ulmet said. "We never push students to top exam results; what we do encourage is for students to try their best."
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations taken at the end of Year 11 serve as a bridge between Key Stage 3 and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in Key Stage 5.
In the past, YCIS Shanghai has repeatedly been awarded the Cambridge Top in the World and Top in China IGCSE awards for students' results.
YCIS has campuses in Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao and Chongqing, as well as Hong Kong and Silicon Valley, in California, the United States. The schools provide bilingual programs focusing on both English and Chinese language and culture. In Shanghai, YCIS has more than 2,300 students from 52 countries and regions.
