Charity dinner helps rural kids
THE Library Project's Annual Charity Dinner has raised around 270,000 yuan (US$40,909) to buy reading materials for rural children.
The gala event was held on May 12 at The Peninsula Shanghai Hotel, featuring a fashion show and auction. Shanghai Daily is the media sponsor of the event.
Proceeds will buy a wide range of reading materials for elementary schools in rural Anhui and Guizhou provinces and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
The Library Project's theme is "Help us make a difference, one book at a time." The Library Project emphasizes that education helps enable people to break the cycle of poverty.
At the fifth annual dinner, Library Project founder Tom Stader and director of funding Wang Ning said the project's 254 libraries in China, including 120 reading corners and 134 reading rooms, received 131 percent more in donations in 2011 than in the previous year.
Since the Library Project started in 2006, 300,000 books, magazines and other children's reading materials have reached more than 250,000 children.
The dinner gala featured a charity fashion show and auction presented by models and designers from seven high schools in the city. Each item of auctioned clothing carried a floor price of 1,000 yuan. Around 300 guests took partin the auction.
