Choosing the right school activities can be tricky

I’VE been participating in after school activities at Concordia since I came here in fourth grade. Back then, I chose Reader’s Workshop because I’ve always loved reading and writing, and cross stitching because it intrigued me. Those activities satisfied my fourth grade self very much, allowing me to interact with other kids who shared the same interests, while learning more about the things I liked.

Now, I’m in middle school. I can join the swim or debate clubs, various sports teams (for both girls and boys), the World Scholars Cup (a fun debate club), Global Issues Network, and more. But selecting the right ones can be difficult. Here are some tips on how to make some rational choices.

First of all, don’t chose an activity simply because your friends are in it. That’s probably something many students are tempted to do, but don’t be afraid to try something different. I guarantee that by the time the semester ends, you’ll have plenty of new friends.

Some clubs and activities require a fair amount of time, so you need to be sure you can handle it. I currently am a part of Model United Nations, Student Ambassadors, Student Council and Dance Club, which require a lot of work and time. If a club takes up too much extra time, do not hesitate to rethink joining it.

Talk with your parents about what clubs you’d like to join, and try to compromise. You’ll find a club or clubs that both you and your parents find acceptable.
