Club aids nature, empowers students
Yew Chung International School of Shanghai’s Gubei campus has numerous student clubs that are involved in creating activities that will make a positive impact on the future, and a prime example is the Environment Club. As with many clubs for Secondary students at YCIS, this group was formed by a student, back in 2009. At present, the club is composed of 30 students. The primary goals of the club are to raise environmental awareness on campus, while addressing the students’ environmental concerns at local, national and international levels.
In our modern age, we are confronted with a variety of extremely complex issues, and many of those issues are along the intersection of environmental systems and social dilemmas. The Environment Club focuses on these problems, and we begin by encouraging students to think deeply about these issues before we look for possible solutions. It’s important that students are able to view the issues from many perspectives, not only their own. Students are able to draw from their academic experience to devise possible solutions.
While the students are discussing and forming solutions, they are also establishing strong friendships within the club. During meetings, students collaborate with their like-minded classmates, sharing their thoughts and ideas, and supporting one another.
One of the guiding principles is the old adage, “think globally, act locally.” For example, the issue of global warming and desertification are wide in scope, but by participating in programs like the Million Tree Project, we are encouraging our local community to become aware that human actions have environmental consequences, while providing specific steps to address these complex issues. This year, the club has a sub-group of students who are very focused on the Million Tree Project. They have set their sights on doubling the number of trees planted by YCIS, aiming for 2,000 trees this year. To make this vision a reality, this group has begun planning a number of fund-raising activities.
Another sub-group within the club has started working on campus to set up a comprehensive waste management system consisting of three main components: recycling bottles, cans, and paper; composting food waste; and collecting and arranging for safe disposal of electronic waste. The new waste management projects, along with coordinated awareness campaigns led by students, are part of the club’s strategy to draw our community’s focus on solutions close to home.
Increasing environmental awareness is important, but the club also is having a profound impact on the students as they come away from a project or event with a new sense of empowerment and hope.
