Cultural variety creates stimulation
THROUGHOUT my many years of teaching at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai, I've enjoyed its multicultural environment and the experience of growing together with my students.
Students at YCIS are from various cultural backgrounds and they are never afraid of showing their different talents and personalities in their studies.
I am always amazed and inspired by their insightful thoughts and enthusiasm in my language and literature classes.
For example, in my IB classes, students use their wonderful bilingual or trilingual skills to compare and analyze different languages and the underlying cultural contexts. Their knowledge, experience and acceptance of different cultures and societies is very impressive. When we read literary works, students are encouraged not only to study the details in the books, but also to reflect on how these works relate to our own reality.
They enjoy critical thinking very much and share lots of fresh and deep ideas in class discussions, oral presentations, and in their written tasks. They are not only learners in a school, but also observers of life and thinkers with their own perspectives.
By communicating with them, my personal view of the world and life has expanded significantly.
With their open minds to various cultures, awesome language skills and passion for learning, our students have made some brilliant achievements in IGCSE and IB exams. IGCSE students have achieved top honors from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), including CIE Top in the World IGCSE Awards, Top in China IGCSE Awards ... Our IB average score is consistently higher than the world average.
Outstanding results in international exams are not, however, our main goal. The main purpose of our teaching is to help our students develop into life long learners.
When alumni come back to Yew Chung and tell me that they are still reading Chinese books in their spare time, wherever they are in the world, I feel great joy from the bottom of my heart. It is my great pleasure to teach students at YCIS.
