Developing compassion in the next generation

AN essential part of our school motto is "to align with love and charity." By providing opportunities for students to volunteer with service-based events, students are exposed to the needs of those who are less fortunate in their local community and abroad. These school-initiated activities are an excellent opportunity for students to make a difference in others' lives.

This month, over 180 students from our primary and secondary schools went to Nanshu School in Zhejiang Province to deliver Giving Tree bags. The Giving Tree project is an initiative that reaches out to donors to provide a Giving Tree bag full of gifts to a local student. Donors are given information such as the recipients' height, weight and hobby, and they then purchase these items and fill the bag, complete with a handwritten note of friendship.

While this was a rewarding experience for all bag donors, the students who were able to personally deliver these bags to the school were left with long-lasting memories, filled with care and appreciation for other students from very different circumstances.

Afterward, many students asked me if there were other ways that they could help the school outside of the Giving Tree project. Responses like these show that charity activities with a focus go a long way in growing compassion in the hearts of our students.
