Dramatic exposure for kids

Western International School of Shanghai students are being introduced to a new creative arts curriculum that exposes them to art, music, dance and drama, which will ground them in drama conventions and approaches. In addition to curriculum initiatives, Darren Scully, artistic director at WISS, is working to devise a number of performances and is directing the WISS Theater Ensemble, which will perform “Living with Lady Macbeth” by Rob John, a play about the audition and rehearsal process in a high school.

“I want to show that drama is a part of everyday life and that you don’t need to be ‘special’ to be an actor: you just need to be truthful and see the way the world is through the eyes of characters,” Scully said.

Scully is also working on a devised physical theater production called “Shanghai Triptych” in which three performers work their way through 24 hours in three stages. The movement work is a real challenge and inspired by physical theater companies such as Frantic assembly. The piece will be shown in early December in a showcase performance.
