Dropping in on ‘The Sound of Music’ ... in pajamas
A PROFESSIONAL production of the musical “The Sound of Music” found rehearsal space here at WISS in the Orsini Theatre and the John Altman Recital Room of our school. Kids from schools all over Shanghai came to audition for the musical at WISS in August, and a few lucky ones made it in. I went to see what goes on in a professional rehearsal and what the kids thought about the whole thing.
Lucky me, I happened to go on pajama day, so I can now cross off “meet director of an official musical production in my sweatpants” from my bucket list.
The rehearsal started off with a singing recap of what the group had been practicing the past few days. When you hear the words “professional musical production” you would probably imagine a strict, regimented atmosphere. Maybe that is true in some places, but not here.
You could really tell that the kids truly love what they are doing and have a genuine passion for singing and acting.
Not only the kids, but director Anton Luitingh and music coordinator and choreographer Duane Alexander are also incredibly passionate about what they do.
But just because it’s a relatively chilled atmosphere doesn’t mean it is not taken seriously.
In fact, the singing group spent 10 minutes on just the pronunciation of “adieu” but with a little help from a native French speaker.
I was only expecting to see about one or two people coaching the group through the singing and acting, but there were specialists in many different fields — even an accent coach to make sure the Von Trapp kids sound authentic.
You can tell it’s a professional production by the amount of detail that’s put into everything. When I heard the harmonies used in the few songs, they were so incredible that only someone who really knows what they’re doing could have arranged them.
Despite this professionalism there was no pressure on anyone, and everyone seemed happy to be there.
The cast was only at WISS for a short while, but they will return for the Shanghai premiere in the beginning of January.
I’m going to do all I can to get tickets for the show!
