Dutch students welcomed

Shanghai Dutch School began an integrated Dutch program at the British International School Puxi campus in 2011. The Dutch program welcomes all native Dutch-speaking students to join not just its educational program but also its weekly extracurricular activity, the Dutch Club.

The Dutch Club is a cultural club in which children learn about life in Belgium and The Netherlands. The main goal is to learn about the nations’ art and world-famous artists, the cuisine, music and cultural rarities in an entertaining way. The club has studied artists Vincent van Gogh and René Magritte, baked Dutch apple pie and “boterkoek” and hosted the famous ginger biscuits baking contest. This year the baking contest will take place in the last week of November, just before it celebrates Saint Nicolas’ birthday, when traditionally the biscuits are eaten.

The Dutch Club also aids the integration of new students at BISS Puxi. Children often feel a bit lost when they are new to a school and don’t speak the language. During lessons in Shanghai Dutch School and at the Dutch Club, they can happily chat away in their mother tongue and make new friends. The Dutch and Belgian communities at BISS Puxi are very socially active and both school lessons and the Dutch Club after school provide a chance for Dutch-speaking students to be a part of that community.
