Excitement builds for new school year

AUGUST is always a very exciting time in education. Every year it is a fresh start for every student ? they get that chance to reflect on what they achieved last year and how they will do even better in the year ahead. Will they start studying a new subject, will they score more tries for the rugby team, or will they simply try and work better with their classmates? The scope of ambition is immense and it is a joy to be part of it.

This will be my first term as principal of the British International School Shanghai, Pudong. I am delighted to be joining a school which has achieved so much and which continues to expand and offer increasing opportunities for students of all interests. The recent academic results have been outstanding and give us all great pride in the students? achievements, and also great endeavour to excel once more in the months ahead.

There is a highly talented group of staff and the parents I have had the pleasure to meet so far have been encouraging and supportive. We look forward to achieving great things together throughout the coming year.

Since 1998, Concordia International School Shanghai has been a place where students are loved and cared for. As the new head of school, I will ensure that we continue this tradition as we celebrate the 15th anniversary with a community of more than 1,200 students from Preschool to Grade 12 and more than 130 highly credentialed faculty and administrators.

We are honored to attract those seeking rigorous academics, a whole-child philosophy and a welcoming, caring environment for the entire family.

It is a great time to be a part of Concordia as we celebrate the completion of our grounds and facilities with the grand opening of the newly renovated Elementary School Library and as we welcome more than 200 new families into our community.

This year our focus is on the word "serve" and Concordia students are embracing the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves by participating in a variety of opportunities exploring service to our host country.

My wife, Melanie, and I are looking forward to serving the Concordia community and extending ourselves personally in this vibrant city of Shanghai. Have a wonderful year.

Early this fall, there was some special type of home cooking going on at SAS.

At our annual teacher workshop, with both campuses gathered together at the Puxi campus Performing Arts Center, nine of our own "home-grown" teachers wowed their peers with presentations. Each of them provided their personal take on delivering the key elements of our mission statement to our students.

With just the right mixture of ingredients, we all learned methods of inspiring:

? Students with lifelong passions for learning

? Students with commitments to act with integrity and compassion

? Students with the courage to live their dreams

Everyone in the audience was spellbound. These teachers stirred in us a deeper understanding of our core values. They created a recipe for an "imaginable future." Each of us who listened learned our own lessons.

Each year, we recruit the top teachers to SAS. We always let them know that those of us at SAS benefit from some of the richest professional development opportunities in the world. And yet, the best of this development comes from working right alongside some of the most talented, caring, knowledgeable and gifted "cooks" anywhere.

The start of the school year brings with it the excitement of the new - the feeling that anything is possible.

2012/13 is the beginning of a new chapter for our organization, as we are proud to open the doors of our Wan Yuan campus. As the co-principals of Wan Yuan's US High School, we look forward to introducing ourselves and our school to the Shanghai community.

Our school motto, "E Pluribus Unum" - out of many one - represents our diverse community of learners, as well as our East meets West ethos, and commitment to the American educational model. We invite colleagues, families and prospective teachers to visit Shanghai United International School in person and/or online. A warm welcome awaits you. Best wishes for the year ahead.
