Future on the rugby pitch looks bright for Scarlets

AS rugby has recently been confirmed as an Olympic event that will feature in the 2016 Olympics, the sport continues to grow in China with more teams becoming involved. In an attempt to support this development, the sports department at Shanghai Rego International School prides itself on being able to deliver a top quality rugby program to its students.

Last year the Rego rugby team joined forces with top Welsh side Llanelli Scarlets in an attempt to develop the game of rugby in China. The Scarlets sent former head coach of the Welsh national team Gareth Jenkins along with fellow ex-Welsh international player Anthony Buchanan to Shanghai to give the Rego players and the wider Shanghai rugby community a chance to brush up on their skills and learn some new tricks for the season coming.

The follow-up from this visit was remarkable for the Rego students. The newly dubbed "Rego Scarlets" took to the field in a variety of tournaments in 2010 and managed to rise to the occasion with the Under 17 squad winning the Shanghai Schools Championships and Rugby For All tournaments. The Under 16 girls and Under 14 boys squads also followed suit by winning their competition in the Rugby For All tournament resulting in Rego making a record-breaking haul of three trophies at one tournament.

This year the future looks bright for the Scarlets as the Under 17 squad successfully defended their crown at this year's Shanghai Schools Championships. Captain Miles Horton commented on the development, "What has made us a good team is not the fact that we have great players, but more that we have a strong team spirit."

The Rego Scarlets hope that things will continue to improve as they compete in the 2011 season.
