Going with the flow on road trip

SLEEPING in, hanging at the beach, eating ice cream, staying up late and playing games is what I expected my relaxing summer to be. However, it was not to be; and, as my summer plans changed, I changed with them.

School ended and we were on a flight back to Michigan. There began my summer of almost non-stop road trips. I hit up Detroit, Baltimore, D.C., the Eastern Shore, Philadelphia, Jersey Shore, Ann Arbor, Lake Ontario, Chicago, Evanston. I’m tired just thinking about it, but my mom still regrets that we didn’t make it to NYC.

All these road trips should have broadened my horizons, however, I ended up sleeping most of the time, even when I was supposed to be navigating. After a while, the interstate landscape was a blur. Moving around like a nomad, staying in motels, stopping at rest stops and eating fast food is not the ultimate in relaxing summer vacations. However, it’s a typical summer for expats, I guess. When your home is on one continent and friends and family scattered across another, you can expect summer to be one big road trip. An oasis during these crazy travels was a three-week stop in Baltimore. Ice cream, movies, museums, and evenings chilling with my family in front of the television, finally!

Now I’m back in Shanghai, ready for school. My dreams of a blissful summer were not realized. But I learned to go with the flow and enjoy the time with my family — and at least the air was clean.
