Golf classes teach skills and fun

Shanghai Singapore International School values knowing how its students learn differently, and when the school set up its golf lessons, its aim is to apply that knowledge.

SSIS introduces golf from kindergarten to senior school and while the main aim is teaching the fundamentals, it is important students learn that golf is fun.

With the more advanced players, the school makes sure they’re always hitting to targets and giving them goals to achieve and to measure improvement. With the older students, teachers become more of a coach and explain how things are going to work on the course. Teachers are talking to them about why they want to hit a chip shot a certain way in a given situation; with a kindergartner, teachers are trying to chip balls into a kiddie pool.

Children prefer to start sports in a group setting, so the school always works with them in classes of seven to nine students at a time per activity. Children who learn golf in a fun setting will stay with it or come back to it. Also, all golfers who have achieved success in the game come from multi-sports backgrounds. So parents can allow children to play as many sports as they want — the child that you want to be a golf champion might become a great baseball player instead.

At SSIS Minhang and Xuhui campuses, golf is part of the PE curriculum from Grade 1 through to Grade 6 with introductory classes for K1 and K2 students. At the Minhang campus, students use the golf range and putting greens to participate in co-curricular activities.
