Hair-raising feats of fundraising
AS part of our new Middle School service-learning initiative at SCIS Hongqiao, we have collectively embarked on an exciting fundraising campaign to help raise money for Cancer Research. It was rolled out through our House System as a fun competition between the five houses, and the outpouring of support and enthusiasm from the entire community has been inspiring.
It's heartwarming for me to see our young adults taking this on as an opportunity to give back to our surrounding community, as well as an opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of others. I would suggest that cancer is a disease that has touched us all in one way or another, and it's a cause that our beautiful Middle School students have authentically rallied around.
We have included a fun-filled recreation night, complete with a baking sale and a walk-a-thon, at the halfway point of the four-week campaign. This entire fundraising event promises to be the highlight of our first semester.
This Middle School fundraiser was organized by our Student Council Leadership Team, in conjunction with our Head of the House System and our House Captains, and they have done a remarkable job creating awareness and getting the Middle School kids excited and eager to contribute.
We are on pace to raise more than US$5,000 for the Chinese Cancer Research Foundation (www.ccsv.org.au). As a culminating activity on December 17, I had my hair cut into a brightly colored Mohawk - featuring the colors of the winning team in fundraising efforts.
I have been unbelievably impressed with our students, our teaching faculty and our parent community who have all embraced this tremendously worthwhile endeavor.
I'm so proud to be a part of such an outstanding, caring and socially responsible Middle School and it is educational initiatives like this that truly get to the heart of what's important in the lives of our students.
