Help beat cancer in Relay for Life

RELAY for Life, now in its fifth year at Shanghai American School’s Pudong campus, is fast approaching. This year the annual event will be held on October 17-18. National Honour Society (NHS) members have spent the first few weeks of the new school year busily planning the event while settling back into a new study routine.

“So far, the planning has been great. The group this year is super motivated. Last year we raised 276,257 yuan (US$44,983) for the American Cancer Society (ACS),” said current NHS president Emily Chen. “So that’s our goal to beat.”

The idea behind Relay for Life is simple: At least one member of each team must be walking at all times throughout the 24-hour event. According to the ACS, the reason for this is that “cancer never sleeps” so neither do participants.

NHS plans to run fun games and themed laps around the track — including a dance lap and conga line lap — for participants as they walk throughout the night. There will also be speakers to share personal experiences dealing with cancer, and shed light on the true purpose of the fundraiser.

Last year’s NHS president Yejin Yeoum stated, “NHS has been successful in establishing Relay as a true SAS Pudong tradition, making the event as diverse as possible events-wise.” She also confirmed that SAS Pudong has set a new record for both the number of participants and money contributed to the ACS every year since the school started running this event.

Last year, the event hosted approximately 500 student participants, NHS members, teachers and parent chaperones. Yejin expressed her happiness in light of the success of last year’s event, stating, “The event was a huge success with so many students having fun and finding meaning and significance in contributing to a good cause.”

As purple is the official color of Relay for Life, the NHS is working on incorporating this theme into this year’s event, selling purple wristbands and giving out purple ribbons for people to wear.
