How they spent their summer vacation

As summer vacation is about to end, Shanghai Daily met with several students, Chinese and foreign, who shared what they did during the holiday and their expectations for the next vacation.

Each of them had different plans at the beginning. Some had a fruitful summer while others felt bored by academic classes.

Dana Chu Tung, 16 years old

Phillips Exeter Academy, New Hampshire

Dana Chu Tung studied at the Shanghai American School before she went to a boarding school in the US. She likes photography. This summer, she went to an orphanage in Swaziland, Africa, through a volunteer program for two weeks to teach African children. She was also a volunteer for the Harvard AUSCR Summit for Young Leaders in China, which took place in August in Shanghai.

Q: What is the most unforgettable thing you have done during summer vacation?

A: The amazing experience in Swaziland — I stayed there for two weeks and took a lot of photos of cute African children. I could not help missing them after I came back.

Q: What other activities did you do?

A: I spent my summer training  playing tennis and squash. I’m traveling to Hawaii for a week before I go back to school.

Q: What do you want to do for your next vacation?

A: I’ll apply for an internship to assist the professors at Stanford University in genetics.

Wang Yiqian, 11 years old

Primary School attached to Shanghai No. 1 Normal School

Wang Yiqian has a busy schedule this summer and spends most of her time taking classes at the Youngster Activity Center of Jing’an District, where she learns piano, performance and singing. She loves doing experiments and writing, and sometimes posts news stories she wrote on her weibo microblog account.

Q: Which classes do you like most?

A: I like singing and playing the piano.

Q: Do you get tired of taking so many classes every week?

A: Not at all. I find every class interesting and I’m happy to be with friends instead of staying at home.

Q: What do you want to do for the next vacation?

A: I want to go traveling with my parents to some big cities or abroad.

Zhu Runyi, 14 years old

The School affiliated to Jing’an Education College

As a middle school student, Zhu Runyi has more academic homework and there is no exception for summer vacation. He takes classes in Chinese literature, mathematics and English on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, respectively.

Q: How do you spend your holidays apart from extra academic classes?

A: I like science and drawing, so I join a biology club and learn to sketching twice a week.

Q: What’s the most fun thing you have done during summer vacation?

A: I resumed my table tennis training, which I started in kindergarten and stopped for some time due to injuries.

Q: What do you want to do for the next vacation?

A: I haven’t thought that far ahead. But I hope my parents won’t push me to take a lot of extra academic classes to prepare for the high school entrance exam.

Lu Xinyu, 17 years old

Baoshan High School

Lu Xinyu will become a senior high school student when the fall semester begins in September. For the entire summer holiday, he has had to take extra classes such as mathematics, English and chemistry to prepare for the college entrance exam.

Q: What do you usually do aside from taking classes during vacation?

A: I watch Japanese cartoons such as “Naruto” and “One Piece.” I also watch movies at home. Horror films are my favorite.

Q: What do you want to do for the next vacation?

A: I want to be able to rest and take time to play basketball and do some exercise. I want to be stronger.
