Howzat! My favorite sport's in China
WHEN people move to China their biggest fear is the language, but when my parents told me about moving to Shanghai from Hong Kong my fear was, "How do I continue to play cricket in China?"
I was upset with the thought of missing cricket, but my love for the sport motivated me to find more information about cricket in China.
As I started settling in the new school and new place, my search continued. I joined the Pudong Cricket Club to play at weekends, but was not enjoying it as much as I should have, always thinking I was just playing for entertainment as cricket had little recognition in China. I realize, though, that cricket grounds like Shanghai Rugby and Football Club are excellent.
I was surprised when I came across news that the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) had donated cricket equipment worth US$42,000 to the Chinese Cricket Association for developing cricket skills at national and regional level among men and women.
Cool ... that means cricket does exist in China at a better standard than I'd imagined, I thought. Further good news came when I discovered that the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had formally introduced the sport to China in 2005. I was so thrilled to know this but wondered how could China compete with strong cricketing nations.
I slowly realized that there is passion for cricket in China and the game is spreading in big cities. China competed in the Twenty20 version of cricket that debuted in the 2010 Asian Games. A Chinese women's team was formed in 2007 and its first senior tournament was in 2009 in India. In 2011 more than 100 new coaching posts were created across nine provinces and schools.
The Chinese Cricket Association's motto is "Ming tian hui geng hao" which means "Tomorrow will be a better day." If China has the desire, it can excel at cricket, as it does in other sports like badminton, table tennis and athletics. After all they are Chinese. Nothing is Impossible!
Now I am playing cricket with greater enthusiasm and my ambition is to play for the regional team in future!
