I feel fortunate to live in Shanghai

I still remember the day in December 2006 when my father told us we would be moving to Shanghai. He was excited as he described the school I would be attending, where the students learned Chinese along with English. In February of 2007, I started at YCIS as an eager Year 6 student. Now, halfway through my final year of Secondary school, I realize why my parents were so excited for me.

In my seven years at YCIS, I have taken part in Chinese New Year activities, learned and performed Chinese songs, won best actress in Chinese role-play competitions, and received an award in a poetry-reciting competition. My Chinese teachers have always been so supportive and encouraging, and I now feel comfortable speaking in Chinese with friends, shop owners and other people around Shanghai.

Another great aspect of learning Chinese is a more complete understanding of Chinese culture. My school has taught me a lot of useful information, from eating and celebrating, to culturally appropriate gestures, such as using both hands to present name cards or gifts. I love living in Shanghai because I have adopted this new culture. I love the friendly people in Shanghai, and their willingness to help me learn. I am excited to continue using my Chinese skills after graduation, and since Chinese is one of the major world languages, I believe our learning at YCIS will bring many bright opportunities in the future.
