Inclusive classrooms foster love for learning

SHANGHAI Singapore International School marks the beginning of our 19th year on August 25. Serving expatriate students from 35 countries with an international staff from 24 different countries, SSIS reflects true internationalism. We believe that this array of cultures deepens and enriches student life in a multitude of ways, and supports our philosophy, vision, and mission of developing global citizens with good character and love of humanity, within a holistic, balanced educational system.

We will be hosting IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) team members for the authorization visit for our new International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate program on August 26. We are very excited to be the first school in China to seek authorization for this program! We believe that the International Baccalaureate program with a career emphasis is very appropriate and timely for the needs of Senior School students in today’s world.

Beginning this year, we are also offering major English language support across our PreSchool to Grade 12 spectrum. Senior School students will now be able to access a Language Lab that will be staffed by teachers throughout each day. The Primary Schools will continue to offer their ISP (Intensive Support Programs) to support language acquisition amongst our younger population.

Shanghai Singapore International School is open to all expatriate students from the age of 2 through Grade 12 who have English skills that will support their success in our rigorous programs. This year, William Zhong, a student at SSIS from PreSchool through Grade 12, scored a 42 on the IBDP exams — we take this as true validation that our curriculum is strong and our teachers are effective. We also just received our first set of IGCSE results, having begun the program two years ago. I am very proud of the fact that more than half our cohort received scores in the Distinction (top award) category.

We are open for tours every day and invite you to visit our campuses and consider Shanghai Singapore International School for your child’s educational journey. As the children begin to settle in, the YCIS Shanghai ECE learning community welcomes the involvement of parents for the successful development of their child. The school values and supports a child’s positive cultural identity and close family connection. Developing trust and relationships between home and school help to ensure a smooth transition.

At the same time, at YCIS, children grow and develop within a nurturing bilingual environment where they learn naturally in two world languages; English and Chinese. This brings connection for children with their Western and Chinese Co-Teachers. Shortly into the semester, the children are moving easily between cultures as they acquire the skills that will serve them well for the wider world in which they live.

Our school takes pride in many traditions and innovations in the areas of academic and character education. YCIS has a unique philosophy and objectives for education, including providing a bilingual program that emphasizes both English and Chinese languages and cultures, leading to fluency in these two important world languages. We believe that education must change with time, and we are constantly evolving our Chinese program at YCIS to provide a wonderful learning experience for students, and to increase open-minded thinking across cultures. Our Co-Principals and faculty are looking forward to welcoming the students back.

After celebrating our 20th anniversary last year, YCIS Shanghai is looking forward to the new year with anticipation. Fresh opportunities lie ahead for all of us — children, staff, and parents.

Whenever I am on a YCIS Shanghai Primary campus I am energized by the life of the school, and I clearly see the enjoyment displayed by the children in this learning environment. Our campuses are truly places where learning is celebrated and where holistic education is made available to all children.

We believe that children learn best when the school and the home work together well and, as such, our parent community is critical. So, in this new year, we invite parents to join us for the journey — one in which our children are again given opportunities to thrive, not just academically, but to also becoming people of character and integrity.

At YCIS Shanghai, students embark on a unique educational journey, immersed in Eastern and Western cultures while acquiring a high level of proficiency in English and Chinese language. Regardless of national heritage, our students achieve a natural ability to communicate and relate seamlessly between Eastern and Western cultures, and in the process, we witness a profound and respectful transformation within our students.

At YCIS, our mission is not only about top academics, but also to nurture the whole child.

We acknowledge our obligation to cultivate a new generation of global citizens by promoting an inner moral compass that enables our students to take the lead through human and global complexities with honesty, compassion, and confidence.
