Inspiring change, one rooftop at a time

To me, our eco-club is a small community that tries to unite our school and the world we live in. Here at British International School of Shanghai, Puxi, the eco-club is fairly large, but we work together as a team.

In the past few years, the eco-club has been working on the Rooftop Garden. We’ve already planned how we will make a gloomy looking rooftop space into a colorful, bright tropical paradise just above our school. Beauty will not be the only reason we plan to change the Rooftop Garden. If we set up the hydroponics like our wonderful teacher Mr Shrewsbury has planned, then the IB students could study it in science class and the clear Perspex flower beds could show all students how roots grow. We also plan to install a solar panel to power the hydroponics and teach younger students about the sun’s power.

But we are also trying to make our school more aware of littering, reducing, reusing and recycling. If we teach our school to be more environmentally friendly, maybe we can teach communities and schools around us, too.

We believe working together can help raise awareness and slow climate change. Just imagine what one eco-club can do to help. Maybe we can inspire others to do the same.
