Leadership and understanding

THE mind is mankind's only time-machine as it contains memories that enable us to relive moments that otherwise seem to be out of our grasp. This summer provided me with even more memories which I can use to transport myself back in time.

The Global Young Leadership Conference takes place simultaneously in the US, Europe and China. It allows one to develop confidence, become open minded to the world and debate issues of global importance, while meeting more than 300 students from around the globe. This summer I was fortunate enough to attend one session across New York and Washington DC.

We debated and discussed our way through global issues from peace and security to health care while keeping in mind the perspectives of the countries we were representing. Visits to embassies and talks from talented and passionate individuals enabled us all to attain a deeper understanding of our countries, as well as our role as future leaders.

One of the most memorable experiences was the UN Global Summit simulation that allowed us to come up with solutions to issues such as human rights and food and hunger. Many of us developed a deeper appreciation for the United Nations role in maintaining balance between all nations in the world.

We were captivated by historical monuments, such as the Lincoln and Martin Luther King memorials, the cacophony of sounds that permeated the streets of New York City and the diverse smells that wafted through the air.

As I transition into IB, I hope that I'll be able to use the skills I attained this summer and question what is presented to me, instead of just accepting it.

This year, I am aiming to contribute more to the school community by raising funds for the charities that the school supports. I also hope to learn new concepts that will enable me to understand the world furthermore, and perhaps one day, help to make it a better place.
