Learning charity turns students into compassionate adults

Charity means the willingness to help others. Understanding and practicing this definition is increasingly important today, when we live in a society in which the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. While people are getting richer and spending more money on luxury goods, there are millions of people in need of a helping hand.

We all know the phrase “Charity starts at home.” While the phrase may sound cliché, the meaning is important to learn and understand.

When thinking about the application of this phrase, “home” can be directly translated to mean our houses and homes in which our families live. However, “home” could also refer to our school, neighborhood and society.

A person who learns about compassion in his or her early days will be much more likely to perform acts of compassion for others in the future.

My school, YCIS Shanghai, instills this sense of compassion in students from a very young age. Through our recent, annual Charity Week, YCIS students have learned the important lesson of giving back to society, while enjoying the spirit of giving, and having fun. During this year’s Charity Week, we created and supported a variety of different fund-raising activities all around the campus, including laser tag, a “Year 11 Personal Assistant Auction,” bake sales, ice cream sales and a water balloon toss game.

In addition to supporting charitable causes, these activities also helped build school spirit, and they allowed students across all year levels to bond to achieve a common goal.

Charity Week activities not only provided us with the opportunity to experience the value of being generous, compassionate and charitable, but we also really enjoyed the fun along the way.
