Learning from volunteering

AS an active International Baccalaureate student, I enjoy being involved with the community by volunteering in service activities.

Every week, I experience a different service opportunity where I can contribute to a society that I would never have met if I had stayed within the SCIS campus grounds.

During this semester, I have attended several service opportunities, such as teaching students at the An Shun Primary School and the You Dao Migrant School program, entertaining elders at the Ai Wan Ting Senior Citizens' Home and helping charities.

At the migrant school I get to meet students who have very little. I was able to give back to these students by helping deliver Giving Tree bags so that they can have a warm coat and boots for winter.

At the senior citizens' home we get to entertain the residents by playing games, singing songs, dancing and acting out skits. They reward us with great smiles.

By engaging in these activities, not only have I added incredible experiences to my life, but these experiences have added joy to the lives of those I have helped as well.

I have also learned to show commitment, despite difficulties finding time to visit these programs. And I've become more comfortable talking to strangers.

Through volunteering, I've learned to make service a part of my daily life.
