Learning to understand the viewpoints of others

ATTENDING high school at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai has been an experience that has benefitted me both academically and personally.

Living in Shanghai means being constantly immersed in the culture and language. I have been able to observe and understand the distinctive culture, use the language skills I learn in school, and appreciate the almost chaotic order in routine and daily life.

Over the years, YCIS has done more than just fuel my thirst for learning; it has given me the opportunity to appreciate other students’ opinions and ideas, which are based on their unique experiences. Such dialogue and interaction have helped me learn to appreciate and understand others’ viewpoints, and this open environment has fostered the formation of an international mind-set that encourages creativity.

One key thing I have learned this academic year is the importance of developing an “open mind” in order to gain new perspectives of the world; not only in an academic environment, but in almost any situation.

Although my family and I are moving to the United States at the end of this academic year, I believe YCIS has well prepared me for my future. The teachers, students and the friendly atmosphere at our school, combined with the hectic and inspirational setting of Shanghai have all had a positive impact in shaping me into a globally minded teenager.
