Medical expert presents at Science Week

I have been involved in cancer research for about 20 years, so I was happy to volunteer to speak with Concordia middle school students on MS STEM Day as part of Science Week. Coming up with a presentation for middle school students would be a piece of cake, right? As the event approached, I found myself wondering if the students would be interested in learning about cancer? Is the topic too serious? I pictured an audience of teenagers, some asleep and the rest completely tuned out.

In reality, participation in Concordia’s MS STEM Day was a wonderful experience. The kids were attentive, inquisitive, and completely engaged. Some shared stories of loved ones affected by cancer and others asked great questions about how you know if you have cancer and how you avoid getting it.

At the beginning of the presentation I was immediately put at ease by a warm welcome and curious faces. I sprinkled the presentation with questions to engage the students in dialogue and they politely (with their hands up) shared what they knew or took their best guess at the answers.

Participation in MS STEM Day was a wonderful experience and I hope to get another opportunity to present to the students in the future. As a parent, it’s great to see that students have access to real-life professionals with whom they can engage.
