One amazing journey ends as another takes shape

FOURTEEN years, nine months, and two weeks ago, I first began my journey as an SCIS Dragon. For the past 17 years, I’ve lived a life different from that of most expat students. I haven’t lived in different countries, I haven’t lived in different cities and I haven’t attended different schools. Somehow still, I’ve managed to meet and befriend a group of people as diverse as any. Naturally, I’ve changed as a person over the past 15 years, and the school has changed too. It’s gone from one campus to three, and from 203 students to almost 2,000 students. The community, however, has remained incredibly diverse.

In our graduating class, we have students from 18 different countries. Each person brings his or her own views to the group and each person contributes in his or her own way, whether it be by randomly breaking into song and dance, by analyzing the student handbook for potential loopholes to exploit, by aspiring to be an Olympic athlete, by reminding people what the homework was, or by forgetting to do the homework and making up entertaining excuses why he or she couldn’t do it.

These individual contributions together form a greater strength as seen in our constant interaction. This allows us to be confident as a group, knowing that each person’s individuality doesn’t separate him or her from the pack but rather makes that person a bigger contributor to the class.

When we graduated middle school and went from being “big” 8th graders to timid freshmen, emphasis was placed on the fact that we were going from the top of the food chain right back to the bottom. We knew in our hearts, though, that was never going to happen. There’s nothing timid about our class. We were never going to be at the bottom of the food chain. We have an incredible amount of leadership in our class, and an unparalleled amount of spirit. We as a class have always considered ourselves to be “in charge,” even when that meant defying the powers that were. Whether we were really in charge or not is still up for debate, but the irrefutable fact is this: The Class of 2014 is THE class to beat — Hongqiao Games, athletics, spirit, and life in general. The camaraderie and bonds we’ve built are unrivaled, and the memories of our class will undoubtedly live on well past this evening and well past the end of 2014.
