Operation Earth gives students the opportunity to learn about pandas
I participated in a youth voluntary work trip in October at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) in Wolong, Sichuan Province.
Hosted by Operation Earth, a Beijing-based youth voluntary work trip agency, the trip included high school students from Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. We first visited China’s biggest giant panda wild training base in Hetaoping, A’ba Prefecture of Sichuan.
During this introductory part of the trip, the students listened to lectures delivered by scientists at the research center, offered assistance to panda keepers and learned to keep a record of the animals’ daily activities by using monitoring devices. This helped us develop a basic understanding of the scientific research and achievements regarding the protection of the endangered species.
The CCRCGP has bred about 200 pandas in captivity and four have been released into the wild including the delightful Xue Xue, who I met during my work trip. She was sent back to her natural habitat less than two weeks after I left in mid-October.
After the training base, we visited the giant panda disease control center at Dujiangyan base in Chengdu. Researchers taught us about the health care practices they have in place for giant pandas. From there, we went to the Panda Kindergarten at Ya’an Bifengxia base, where we assisted in making steamed corn bread and panda milk to feed the cubs.
The event is held several times each year. Please contact Operation Earth if you are interested in joining one of their voluntary work trips.
