Parents can encourage their child’s inner artist

WE’VE all heard the arguments for integrating art curriculum in schools — they are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, more likely to participate in a math and science fair, more likely to win an award for their writing. The data and research is overwhelming.

Parents can encourage the inner artist in your child? Here are 10 simple ways:

1. Shanghai is bursting with cultural activities. Spend a day at a local museum, go to a park and join in the dancing, or take a sketch pad to the Bund and let your imagination run wild.

2. With young children, play visual games that incorporate colors and shapes, like “I Spy With My Little Eye.” This type of activity helps kids interpret and use visual information to make choices, problem solve and think critically.

3. Talk to your child’s teacher and let them know that you support the integration of arts into the curriculum. Ask the teacher if you can help in any way.

4. Visit the library and have your child select books that stimulate their imagination.

5. Integrate technology — there are many computer programs, mobile applications and games that incorporate art and design. They are fun for kids too. Video games in moderation can help a child with problem-solving skills, spatial awareness and organization.

6. As a family, save recycled and used household items and then build a sculpture. Or use the items to design an outfit and have a fashion show.

7. Don’t judge your child’s taste in art — if they feel criticized for their likes it will get in the way of their appreciation of art.

8. Keep in mind that art can be challenging and intimidating for some kids, but perseverance, hard work and focus are imperative.

9. Encourage your child to be part of a play or join a band. Collaboration in the arts teaches kids to learn how to work in a group.

10. When selecting a school for your child, inquire about the art, dance, theater and music programs. What art facilities does the school provide? This will help you decide which school is best for your child.
