Parents have an extremely significant role to play in their child’s studies

THROUGHOUT my many years as an educator, two things have never changed: all parents want their child to be successful, and they are eager to support their child’s learning and growth at school.

When children first come to school, it can be a bit overwhelming as they settle in, meeting new people and learning new social rules. At YCIS, we spend a great deal of time working to build relationships with the children and their families. Getting to know and understand how each family works together allows the children to feel comfortable, and it’s not until a child is secure in their learning environment that they will really begin to explore the world around them. Parents can help support this by discussing and speaking positively about school experiences at home. When children are excited and curious about school, they are more eager to learn. Secure children also take risks by asking questions and finding answers, and learn it’s OK to make mistakes.

Successful learning also requires hard work and persistence, and parents can help instill these traits into their child, just as teachers do at school. We have all heard children say, “I can’t do it,” even though they have not yet tried something. Parents can support their child at home with gentle encouragement to try new things in order to move on to next level of thinking, just as YCIS teachers help comfortably extend children in their educational journey, allowing them to have and enjoy many small successes along the way.

Parents can also support their child before they even come to school. At home, parents can help by reading to their child daily, and by talking with them about their day, and various news and topics from around the world as they get older. When parents have conversations with their child, they are increasing their child’s vocabulary, as well as their ability to hold a conversation with others, and helping them realize their thoughts are important.

Together, parents and teachers can encourage good habits and allow children to explore their world while they are young. By reinforcing lessons about hard work, persistence, and learning from mistakes at school and at home, children will be on the path for success.
