Providing good environment allows kids to excel

EDUCATION and its delivery has progressed a great deal over the years with students today not just viewed as vessels of knowledge but free thinkers able to operate in a global world. With that said, what are the qualities a school needs to enables such development?

Jonathan Paulson, communications officer at Shanghai Community International School, says: “There are many factors but one common denominator is a safe place for children to learn and grow.”

I am sure we can remember that teacher who took the time to give extra help after school, or the school counselor that provided support when we were feeling down. I call this “school heart.” Children need to feel supported or safe at their school in order to push their limits for personal growth.

Richard Eaton of Xiehe Education says: “Expose children to the world as it evolves. Don’t shelter them too much. Let them spread their wings and take risks.” This allows character development, enabling one to fall and then teach them how to get back up.

In most cases parents are looking to schools to promote the next educational journey for their children — university. In today’s competitive world of post-secondary education, schools have gone beyond just looking at GPAs and SAT scores to decide acceptance.

They want to see what the student can bring beyond just academic capability. A school that provides service learning opportunities, field trips, and character development can lead to a more holistic and well-rounded education. Not only can these experiences assist a university application, but they better enable students to know what they want to do in life.

Michael Donaldson, managing director of Pathways Education Group, says: “Change will be constant in our future world, but love and support from parents, and a strong relationship with the school, the students and the parents will be the constant within that change.”
