Rich course offerings in summertime
SHANGHAI universities are filling the summer break with high-quality courses, lectures and overseas exchange programs to help students meet global challenges.
For the first time this year, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has added a summer session. Compared with the spring and autumn semesters, the summer semester lasts only four weeks but it includes intensive courses, varied activities, internships and overseas studies.
"The new three-semester system is an international practice adopted by many world-class universities," said Huang Zhen, vice president of the university. "The new system will help the university invite top scholars to give lectures and courses."
More than 80 overseas professors will lecture this summer at Jiao Tong University.
In the past, differences in semester dates made it difficult for overseas academics to accept invitations, Huang said.
"Many scholars are willing to lecture here for a short time without disrupting their own research, but we had only two long semesters in the past."
The new summer session will make it easier for students and teachers to attend short-term overseas studies without missing classes.
More than 17,000 Jiao Tong University students will attend more than 300 classes this summer.
Also for the first time, Fudan University launched an international summer session early this month.
About 100 students from more than 10 countries are taking five-week courses at Fudan, 40 of them on scholarships.
"This is my first visit to a non-English-speaking country," said Connor Ryan, a scholarship student from Wittenberg University.
He has been learning Chinese for a year and is enthusiastic about practicing and learning more in China.
Fudan offers 13 courses in English on Chinese history and culture, society and politics, economy and management.
Students are encouraged to use the Chinese instant messaging service QQ and microblogs to make friends and communicate.
The international courses at Fudan University are recognized for credit at exchange students' universities.
Many of the applicants come from top university including Stanford University, the University of Cambridge and the National University of Singapore. Some Chinese students also take courses to communicate with the foreign students.
Summer courses and summer semesters have become popular among city universities and many plan to do so in the future.
