Rigorous learning equips students with skills that will last a lifetime

SHANGHAI American School offers an exciting and dynamic academic program with a wide variety of advanced high school courses, including many International Baccalaureate classes and courses necessary for completing the full IB Diploma Program. Most of our Grade 11 and 12 students take one or more IB classes, and a number of them take the full IB diploma.

IB classes are engaging, rigorous learning opportunities taken over two years. Our IB teachers are part of a global community of educators working together to ensure relevant, high-level and consistent instruction. In each class, students show their progress in a variety of ways that includes presentations, lab investigations, written analyses performances and tests. Classes examine texts, case studies and topics that come from around the world. Course-end external examinations and externally moderated internal assessments ensure students follow the same program as others do globally.

Students who take the full IB diploma are engaging in a program that is broad and balanced, conceptual and connected. In addition to a core six classes, students take on independent scholarly research as well as a core class called Theory of Knowledge. This course synthesizes their learning by asking fundamental questions about how knowledge is sought across various disciplines. Diploma students also must fulfill a requirement by participating in extra-curricular experiences across the areas of creativity, action, and service.

To succeed in IB classes and in the IB diploma, students are committed to sustaining rigorous study over two years. They must be eager to engage with a variety of viewpoints and strive for a balanced lifestyle of study and extra-curricular experiences. Students who take IB classes come to understand that how they approach learning matters for their level of success. They work towards developing the ability to take on a higher level of learning that will serve them in college and equip them with the skills and disposition necessary to solve the complex challenges of the future.

Students at Shanghai American School leave their IB experience with a strong sense of what they know, what they can do and how they can make a difference in our world.
