SSIS's victory in SISAC basketball tournament

BASKETBALL players of the Shanghai Singapore International School woke up thrilled and exhilarated to know they were going to be playing in their very first Shanghai International Schools Activities Conference (SISAC) tournament on January 15. It was a day everyone was really anticipating, but with this being the first tournament, no one really knew what to expect.

The girls team went off to Shanghai Rego International School to play in the SISAC D2 Girls Plate Division, while the boys team headed for Concordia International School Shanghai in Pudong to play in the SISAC D2 Boys Cup Division.

The girls lost their first match to SMIC by four points, losing the chance to play for first or second place in the tournament. However, after every storm there's a rainbow, and the girls made an outstanding comeback by winning with a score of 27 to 20 points against LAS and reaching the highest points ever scored during any of the games in their regular season.

Cruz Alvarado, the girls' coach, was very proud of the girls for making it to their final match of the day and to be playing for third place. The girls were matched against SMIC again - the team that had defeated them in the first game of the day. This time, the girls became fighting Seamo warriors and beat SMIC by a score of 26 to 20 points, leaving the tournament with smiles on their faces. It was truly unexpected for the girls to take third out of eight places as SSIS had never had a girls' basketball team before. Not only did they do their coach proud, but also their fellow teachers and schoolmates.

As the girls left Rego's gym with the joy of victory, they joined the boys at Concordia. The boys were playing in the championship round of the day for first place in the tournament after beating YCIS Pudong by 31 to 29 points and SAS Pudong by 27 to 21 points. The gym was filled with tension as the final match for first place began. SSIS was Puxi's strongest team, while SMIC was Pudong's strongest team.

Throughout the whole game, the score remained very close with only a few points separating the sides at any one time. At half time, SMIC was ahead. However, by the beginning of the third quarter, the Seamo warriors made an amazing comeback with frequent layups and free throws, and were soon leading by more than two points.

Anxiety filled the air as their coach, Stanley Tan, instructed them from the sidelines as the minutes were counting down. Supporters from SSIS were on their feet, waiting to yell their joys of victory. As the last quarter ended with a really close score of 38 to 35, everyone jumped on their feet chanting "Seamos!" and the boys of SSIS took home the championship trophy of the SISAC D2 Boys Cup Division. It was a spine-tingling moment as Tan, along with Terence KeYou and U Minn went up on stage to receive the trophy.

January 15 was truly a memorable day for the students and staff of SSIS as history was made on that day. It was the beginning of a basketball legacy that will hopefully go on for a really long time … the Seamos of SSIS have really made their mark!
