SUIS-Gubei students achieve top results

Students and staff at Shanghai United International School’s Gubei campus have once again achieved outstanding results at all levels, whether IGCSE, International Baccalaureate or university entry.

IGCSE results continue to be very impressive. IGCSE, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, is an academically rigorous, internationally used, specialized, English-language curriculum. SUIS-Gubei has been punching above its weight since our first cohort in 2009, when one of our students gained the highest score in Science IGCSE in the whole of China, to 2010, when SUIS-Gubei achieved the third-highest results in China, gaining 36 percent A*-A.

It continued in 2011, where SUIS-Gubei greatly exceeded this performance with one student gaining 100 percent in her English IGCSE, and in 2012, where the A*-C pass rate was increased to 92 percent.

This success continued into this year, when we achieved an impressive increase to 94 percent A* to C, of which 52 percent were the top grades A*-A. This is the best set of IGCSE results in the history of the Xiehe Group.

The campus facilities might be modest, but the teaching and learning here together with the exam results put SUIS-Gubei on par with the leading international schools in the world.

This solid base at IGCSE has served our students well at IB level and with their university applications. Our average IB diploma scores in May 2013 were 35.5 points per pupil (worldwide average is 29 points), and all our Grade 12 students achieved entry to the university of their choice.

SUIS-Gubei students can now be found at top universities across the world, including Cambridge in the United Kingdom, Tufts University in the United States, the Australian National University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Waseda University in Japan, to name but a few.

The ethos of the community we have been building since SUIS-Gubei’s inception is becoming more established and confident. We can be proud of the emphasis we have put on academic rigor. For instance, we insist our students have a civilized breadth of learning and so they do arts and humanities as well as science and math; although our courses are taught in English, we insist all our students learn Chinese.

Our program puts at its core the concept that students are active learners and that they, especially, can talk fluently about their learning. We review students’ progress every two weeks and our pastoral and academic teams work closely together to monitor students’ progress.

The courses our students follow are indeed very demanding but they are the best preparation for our students to get into some of the best universities in the world.

We insist, too, that our students are equally assiduous in developing interests beyond their academic studies. Whether through our extra-curricular program, the sports program or through the charities committee, SUIS-Gubei students are expected to actively contribute to their school community and not just to take from the teaching offered.

Opportunities abound, and our students contribute by joining the orchestras, the drama group, the Duke of Edinburgh program, becoming prefects, or even becoming house captains or head boy or head girl. The sports program continues to go from strength to strength. Our latest success is for three of our students to have been accepted into the Shanghai Dragons Touch Rugby Team to play international teams.

Our intention is not just that our students are accepted by good universities but that they have the confidence, language and social skills to thrive once they begin the next stage of their life at a Western university and that they have the resilience to see the course through.

SUIS-Gubei shows how much a community can achieve with dedicated staff and students, parental support and a clear direction.
