SUIS-Gubei students impress university reps
AS part of its continued expansion, Shanghai United International School’s Gubei campus held its first University Fair in late February.
SUIS-Gubei is an 11-18 school following the IB Diploma program, a diploma that goes down well with universities if the enthusiasm these university representatives showed is anything to go by.
Representative after representative repeated the message that they really want IB students — not just because IB is a demanding course that proves how strong IB students are, but because it is a genuinely sound education.
It is not narrow in its subject range but broad, nor skewed to arts, languages, sciences or humanities but balanced across all disciplines. In addition, the IB program requires students to be rounded in terms of social interaction and contribute to their community via the CAS program (Creativity, Action and Service). They must also produce an in-depth extended essay that demands university-level research skills and, to cap it all, a course in thinking about thinking, the Theory of Knowledge course.
It’s no wonder SUIS-Gubei students in recent years have had offers from universities all over the world from Cambridge to Boston to Hong Kong University to Waseda in Japan, to name a few.
Students and parents were delighted to hear confirmation from the university reps that the IB Diploma could get students Academic Credit (shortened courses) in the United States, as a boost to their GPA in their application.
In the packed exhibition hall, hundreds of students and parents talked with representatives from universities around the world, mostly from the US and the UK, followed Australia, Canada and European countries.
Students were well aware that this event was not just an opportunity to collect brochures, but a chance to make an impression on the representatives who might well note their names for consideration by admissions departments.
The energy of these mini-interviews was evident. Name cards were swiftly exchanged.
Parents learned about scholarships and were interested in the heavily subsidized fees available in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.
Still, the US and UK remain the top destinations for SUIS-Gubei students. These students comprise more than 30 nationalities with representatives from all continents (except Antarctica). Substantial numbers come from the UK, US and Italy, as well as China.
It was a truly international evening.
Escaping from the crowds around the exhibition area, parents and students relaxed at the popular school coffee shop before the presentation about the university application process.
From humble beginnings three years ago with its first cohort of just six IB students, this year SUIS-Gubei is preparing 60 students and next year 100. The bustling atmosphere of the fair reflected these growing numbers and as they grow, the administration needs to keep pace. The university counseling team is expanding and the events are getting bigger.
All in all, the universities met outstanding students, parents saw the breadth of choice available and everyone was that much more wiser by the time it was all over.
The sheer amount of choice of universities and university courses can seem overwhelming but the flip side is that there will be an ideal course out there for you, just keep looking! SUIS-Gubei will hold its next University Fair in September.
