Scholar’s Bowl in UAE fulfilling

During the summer, one of my friends, Alissa Johnson, joined me on an amazing trip to Dubai for the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round. We competed in four different, very tough events that required rigorous study beforehand. Despite the work required, it was an amazing event that I would gladly repeat next summer.

The global round consisted of four intense events: Team Debate, Scholar’s Challenge, Collaborative Writing and the Scholar’s Bowl. We also got to compete in a scavenger hunt, a ball and a desert safari. Our original third teammate, Alex Cox, was unable to join us in the UAE, so we worked with Bora, a student from Turkey.

Bora worked with us on all four competitive events. In the Team Debate, we had to argue against three teams about topics related to the theme “A World in Motion.” We won our last two debates, which was incredibly exciting! Because this event involved public speaking, it was the most stressful thing we did. The Scholar’s Challenge and Collaborative Writing were written events. The challenge required us each to take a very difficult multiple-choice test. For Collaborative Writing, we each had to write our own essay on topics that we chose from a list. My personal favorite was the Scholar’s Bowl, a massive quiz bowl. We were presented with trivia questions based on the topics we had studied. It was very difficult, but the most fun!

I can’t forget to mention the alpacas! Alpacas are the Scholar’s Cup mascot. At our regional round in Shanghai, and at our global round in Dubai, we received stuffed alpacas. Our alpacas weren’t our only awards. The satisfaction of getting so far and the joy of meeting new people will keep us going back for more!
