Serving up some squash

WHAT if there were a sport with the agility of soccer and basketball, the finesse and gracefulness of badminton, the mental skills of golf, and the power and precision of tennis? What if I told you that the sport was squash?

Being one of the most welcomed sports in the US, squash also poses as a great way to get into many of the top colleges in the world. All Ivy League schools have a varsity squash team. Many other great schools such as Stanford University, MIT, and Williams College also have a squash team. And 98 percent of all squash players are college graduates, including of which 57 percent have further graduate degrees. Many studies have shown that an average squash player burns up to an astonishing 750 calories per hour.

Why is squash my favorite sport? Squash makes you think strategically to outsmart your opponent and to keep the game under your control. I like the feeling when your opponent makes an error and the adrenaline rushes through your body when you win a crucial point.

Squash is also a great social sport. Squash gives you an opportunity to meet other international, like-minded squash players. Befriending someone can be surprisingly easy, all it takes is some courage.

Friendships are usually formed when you are playing a game with your opponent. Because of squash, I now have many international squash buddies I can chat with when we meet at a tournament or just on SMS.

Meeting these new people also opened my eyes to the outside world. I now understand the basic aspects of culture like education systems and recreational pastimes in many different countries around the world.
