Shanghai a truly inspirational city
IN 2008 when I came to Shanghai as a tourist my first expression was "Ah, one more city of skyscrapers and subways and overhead bridges!" It looked like a wider Singapore, a cleaner Mumbai and a block of Manhattan shifted from West to East.
However, a year ago when I moved here, I saw the city in a different perspective. The very fact that from being a small fishing town, Shanghai had transformed itself to being one of the world's finest cities, struck me in the first place. Not only has it undergone a massive makeover in its economic and social development but also in sports and culture. From the Pudong skyline to the majestic Bund, Shanghai beautifully incorporates its history into the big picture and while it continues to grow it hasn't forgotten its historic culture with a mix of new and old.
When Shanghai hosted the World Expo 2010, it showed the world its culture and diversity through its organization, architecture and music. And coming to my favorite part - sports - Shanghai hosts some of the best sporting events all year long. There is the F1 Chinese Grand Prix, Shanghai Tennis Masters and BMW golf masters. It also boasts the home of Shanghai Shenhua that recruited famous soccer players Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.
With future projects like the Shanghai Tower, estimated to be the second tallest building in the world and then Disneyland, entertainment will not be a problem. I'm sure this city will never run out of energy.
Recently as part of the Shanghai International Youth Interactive Friendship Camp, I traveled in and around Shanghai, absorbing myself in all it had to offer. I visited the neighboring watertowns, learned about ink wash paintings and dragon dancing, stayed with a Shanghainese family, savored their xiaolongbao and tried karaoke singing.
Exactly a year later all I can say is I have fallen in love with this city. I want to make Shanghai my role model and get inspired to transform myself to be the best I can be.
