Spooky Halloween treats
NOT too long ago the weather was sizzling hot, but now the air outside is cooling quickly. The change in temperature means that fall has arrived at our doorsteps. But just because summer has ended, doesn’t mean the fun has to stop.
Just around the corner is Halloween, an exciting holiday where children dress up in costumes. While most kids like to be social and go trick-or-treating with their friends, there’s a lot families can do together. This season, I suggest kids and parents spend a night together baking some spooky Halloween cupcakes as a way to bond.
Plain ol’ cupcakes like chocolate with vanilla frosting or vanilla with chocolate frosting are boring, but this Halloween, why not throw some excitement into the mix? Make a skeleton, ghost, or a jack-o-lantern cupcake. In my opinion, skeletons are the easiest and most fun to make. Simply smear white icing onto a rounded cake and smooth with a knife. Then, take an icing bag filled with black frosting and pipe two round circles on the top half of the cake for the skeleton’s empty eyes. Underneath, draw a half circle with vertical lines to represent a toothy smile. Next, draw a long vertical line down the center of the cupcake for its spine. To add detail, draw rounded half circles across the spine for the ribs. Add four bony-looking lines for arms and leg. Voila! You have a very creepy skeleton cupcake.
Squeeze a couple of drops of green food coloring in your cupcake batter before you bake. It will add a pop of color and fun to your creation, and you will have whisker-licking good cupcakes.
