Students hold elections
THIS year at Concordia, many elementary school students ran for Student Council. Posters were up all over the walls, and everybody was buzzing with excitement. It just happened that the 4th graders were learning about leadership in social studies, 3rd graders were Following Characters into Meaning, and 2nd graders were learning to be an agent of change.
Candidates had all sorts of ideas: free dress, better food for lunch, and a desire for a cleaner environment. They just had to put their ideas into action. But there could only be one representative for each class. Who will we vote for? Ruby says, “Vote for me because I will make classes fun!” Eleanor replies, “Vote for me because I will listen to your ideas!” Everybody wants to win. Some want to be the “voice” representing others; some want to be the voice of change, and others want to make everybody happy.
Election Day! One by one, candidates went up in front of their classes and presented a speech on why they deserved your vote. I could feel they were nervous but also sure of themselves.
When time came to submit our votes, many students couldn’t decide. As we turned in our votes, the candidates were all anxious. We waited for the announcements — who will win?
