Summer nerd camp — much more fun than you’d think
SUMMER is usually the time when most teenagers want to have fun and take a break from school. Not many want to look at or even think about school work.
However, this summer I took on the challenge of going to camp — nerd camp to be specific. It’s a camp for school and studying. I was going to be spending my summer doing school at an American university in the TiP program.
There are about 10 different classes students can take. I was accepted into Modern Medicine: Disease and Immunology, a college-level course.
Class started at 9am and ended at 12:30pm. Lunchtime was 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Then we would go back to class until 4pm. Immediately after class, there was a one-hour slot of free time. Dinner was from 5-6pm and after that was evening study, meaning more school time. Evening activity or mandatory fun was scheduled from 8-9:30pm, which led to another free period of time until lights out at 10:45pm.
Classes were quite intense and hard to keep up with if you didn’t listen to your instructor. I got to go on field trips to museums, hospitals and medical schools. It might sound like you are back in school again, but it really wasn’t the case. I felt like I was actually doing something I enjoyed. It certainly helped that there was no homework or tests.
People say TiP changes you and you can never replace the people you meet there. In the beginning, I laughed at that statement but at the end of three weeks, I understand what it means.
TiP brings out the best in you and everyone becomes family at the end of three weeks. I could not have asked for a better summer and I can’t wait to go back again next year.
