Teaching girls dance has taught me

I’m an 11th grader at the Western International School of Shanghai. Every Sunday morning my classmate friend, Daria Andreeva, and I run a small dance class for local young girls. Our class currently consists of four little girls who just recently completed their first dance performance.

I chose to volunteer to run this program because I have dance experience and I thought it would be a great opportunity to have a CAS activity that would be something I could enjoy doing. And I was right. This dance program is one of the best activities I have ever been involved in.

Daria and I began our first classes teaching the girls the basics of ballet. After some weeks we began to choreograph a routine for them, which they then spent the next few weeks learning, rehearsing and finally performing. These four little angels danced in front of our whole secondary school and they did it fearlessly. The applause was thunderous when they were done.

I look forward to Sundays because these girls come in each week so eagerly, ready to dance and to learn. Not only do they consider dance class as just an hour of fun, but that they take it seriously and practice at home.

It is really a privilege for me to be able to work with them, as throughout these weeks not only have I been teaching, but learning as well.

I’ve improved my teaching abilities, communication skills, ability to meet goals, confidence, choreographing and so much more.
