Teamwork is key in education BC-style
WHEN you enter into a typical Shang Yin British Columbia Primary Classroom, you will notice that some things are different from a traditional Eastern classroom.
For one, there are usually less students - in keeping in line with British Columbia mandated numbers in a primary classroom. Also, on Shang Yin campus, there are two teachers, an Eastern and a Western teacher, both fluent in English, but with the added advantage of a Chinese speaking teacher who can assist with those students who come with Chinese language but little or no English.
You will also find a very different teaching style from that of a traditional Eastern classroom. Students may not always be seated at a desk. Some of their learning will be conducted while they are seated on a carpet, close to the teacher, who reads from a picture book and spends a lot of time with students, orally sharing the language of the book.
Discussion is part of the program and students are encouraged to express their views about a book or a topic at hand. Learning is student-centered, meaning the needs of all learners are addressed as much as possible and many times throughout the day. Both teachers are in the classroom, supporting each other's lessons.
When you look around, you will see "word walls" of common English words that can be used by students in their writing. You will also see the BC prescribed learning outcomes for units the class is working on, posted on a wall. Student work will be proudly displayed for all to see, both within the hallways and in the classroom.
In a BC Primary Class, the teachers are used to having visitors and will welcome visitors in a true "open-door" policy. Though you are asked to make an appointment, visiting is encouraged.
Working together, as a team, is an integral part of the Shang Yin BC Primary campus. Teachers at the BC campus have two structured planning sessions per month but they usually plan as a team, informally, on a daily basis as well. BC teachers are British Columbia–certified and come with top teaching standards and credentials. Most have at least one post-secondary degree, many have more.
Finally, you will find very happy students, who love their teachers, who love to learn and enjoy coming to the BC Primary campus.
