Trips gave community insight
THIS year, Grade 9 students from SSIS went on trips to Zhengzhou, Henan Province. The school arranges these kinds of trips to offer alternative experiences for students.
Each grade level has a theme for their excursions and for G9 it is "Peace and Conflict."
First, we went to Zhengzhou. After getting off the plane, the first things we did was to visit a temple and learn its history.
As the students from SSIS come from different countries, we divided into two groups - one for people who can understand Chinese, the other for students who can speak English, but not Chinese.
I chose the Chinese group as I believe that the monk guide is more comfortable relating the history of this Shaolin Temple in Chinese.
At the temple are many huge rocks on which Chinese characters are written. These carry information about the thoughts of Qin Shi Huang, who became the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BC. When I was listening to the lecture, I realized that there are big differences of conception between the 21st century and ancient times.
Once the lecture finished, we were given time to eat the lunch.
For our other excursion we took a bus trip to a local school.
As the teachers explained, our schools have collaborated for years and we went to meet the pupils.
The students seemed grateful that we were visiting, and lots wanted our autographs.
One of our party was wearing her sunglasses while she was signing her name - she looked just like some Hollywood celebrity.
This year's excursions taught us the importance of community and service work in the local and global community. I hope that next year I can experience more meaningful events.
