Typhoon assistance more than doubled goal
On November 8, devastating Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines as one of the largest storms ever seen. Thousands of dreams were shattered as victims lost family members, friends and homes.
Being of Filipino heritage, my family felt the impact of the catastrophe reverberate through our hearts. We wanted to do all we could to reach out to victims.
My sisters and I had the idea of starting a fundraising campaign, called “Pet of Hope,” with an initial goal of selling 500 tarsier stuffed toys and raising 50,000 yuan (US$8,000) to be donated through the Philippine Red Cross.
We designed posters, found suppliers to help produce the toys and pooled our resources to increase awareness. My sister even made a speech in one of the schools. Through our hard work, what we initially thought was a small project started to vastly exceed our expectations.
With help from family and friends, as well as an endorsement from Philippine Consul General Charles Jose, the charity project has reached many schools, communities and offices, including SCIS, SSIS, SUIS, WISS, New Horizons, New Pathway, Star Play Academy, Parkway Medical Dental Facilities and Shanghai United Family Hospital.
The project has raised over 120,000 yuan in just a month, and is continuing until Chinese New Year. My family and I would sincerely like to thank everyone for their donations; we will ensure that all the funds will be channeled to the victims through the most credible organizations we can find.
Volunteerism is innate to all people but taking the initiative to act is seldom done. Help given to many out of self-motivation rather than social pressure is a pleasant surprise that I find to be truly rewarding.
